Vehicle Charging Station Implementation Program

Overview

Alaska is experiencing a growing shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) and associated charging infrastructure, a trend that promises to boost the state’s economy and offer cost savings to Alaskans. Despite this transition, barriers such as range anxiety, concerns about cold-weather performance, and high initial costs have hindered widespread adoption among residents. To address these challenges, the Alaska Energy Authority (AEA) has committed to leading efforts to minimize these obstacles and accelerate EV integration.

In pursuit of this goal, the AEA has actively developed charging infrastructure. This includes funding an EV Fast-Charging Network that connects the Kenai Peninsula to Healy, installing 15 fast chargers and eight Level 2 chargers across nine communities. Additionally, the AEA has collaborated with the Department of Transportation & Public Facilities to install Level 2 charging stations at state-owned facilities in Anchorage, further expanding accessibility for EV owners. These initiatives are supported by the Alaska Electric Vehicle Working Group (AKEVWG), which convenes monthly to discuss EV and charging infrastructure developments with diverse stakeholders from across the state.
