The Alaska Ferry against a backdrop of snowcapped mountains

Tustumena Replacement Vessel (TRV) & Other Mainline Replacements

Overview

Addressing the age of the AMHS fleet is a part of the long term plan for updating the fleet and improving operations for the benefit of Alaskans. The average age of the AMHS fleet is just under 37 years, the primary focus for this effort is the oldest ships in the fleet. This means starting with the storied Tustuemena, one of two 60 year old vessels in the fleet.

The general goal is to bring down the average age of the fleet by introducing new vessels, while also providing much needed maintenance and improvements to our existing fleet. We look forward to preserving this part of Alaska’s history while preparing AMHS for future generations.
