Wood pellet mill

Pellet Mill Demonstration Project

Overview

Southeast Conference (SEC) is developing a Pellet Mill Demonstration Project on Gravina Island in Ketchikan, Alaska, with the aim of creating jobs, reducing energy costs, and addressing environmental concerns. This facility will convert various waste streams, including discarded pallets, forest residuals, and municipal solid waste, into renewable biomass energy. The project is designed to produce up to 300 tons of pellets annually for local demand and serve as a replicable model for other communities. For example, in Ketchikan, the mill will prevent 70,000 pounds of wood pallets from entering the landfill, and it will also utilize the significant wood waste (chips and sawdust) generated by sawmills on nearby Prince of Wales Island.

Leveraging SASS funding, SEC has adjusted its business plan and feedstock supply to overcome development challenges. The project team has successfully procured competitive equipment quotes and managed contractual work, planning, and operations through existing contacts and local sourcing, ensuring an efficient and sustainable approach to biomass energy production in the region.
