The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) Long-Range Plan (LRP) is a 20-year investment guide, aiming for a vision of service by 2045 through short-, medium-, and long-term investments. This ferry service is essential for isolated coastal communities, providing transportation for people, goods, and services, and promoting economic opportunities. The LRP’s development is based on the needs of Alaskans who rely on the marine highway system for access to medical, social, cultural, and recreational services. It will define foundational service and direct investments in infrastructure, workforce, and support systems to ensure safe and reliable service. Phase 1 of the LRP will cover the next three years, while the final document will span over two decades of planning from 2023 to 2045.
SEC also worked on community assessments AMHS to figure out what services were needed most in which communities. This accurate information will help inform an effective LRP for Southeast Alaska, to make sure our communities get what they need to develop and grow over the next two decades.
