Southeast Alaska is a globally significant source of seafood. Industries in the region are known for their high quality products and unique appeal. Additionally, local communities and foreign consumers value the seafood of Southeast for its ties to the cultural identities of the region.
The Southeast Conference aims to create jobs and generate wealth by advocating for a well-managed, sustainable and resilient seafood sector. In an effort to strengthen ocean based industries, SEC seeks to improve and expand maritime infrastructure, allowing for higher-value ocean products that reach more markets. Opportunities to increase value include:
- Prioritizing mariculture
- Increasing energy efficiency
- Strengthening regional seafood processing
- Sea otter utilization and sustainable shellfish harvesting
However, many fisheries in the region are in decline due to seafood prices and operational costs. Leaders in the seafood industry are experiencing significant economic challenges marked by historically low salmon prices, rising operational costs, consolidation of processing facilities, and unfavorable global dynamics. Seafood business leaders view low seafood prices as the greatest threat to the industry.
Key opportunities for improvement include increased value in processing, waste utilization, and sales of locally-caught seafood on cruise ships. Learn more about programs and projects that promote sustainable seafood industries and robust maritime infrastructure below.
